Loki, Age 13 Loki was born to a pure bred Labrador show dog who got out one night and came home “in a family way”. The litter was brought into the Yamhill County animal shelter, where Loki met Leo, a little boy eager to find his first dog. Loki waddled over to Leo, sat down in front of him, and licked him on the nose. They have been the best of friends ever since. But that’s not the end
of the story . . . Leo had been born with a
debilitating liver condition; almost from
day one Loki became his champion and
protector, and over the years Loki was
trained to perform a variety of tasks for
Leo. Leo delighted in baking the homemade
treats used to train Loki, and Leo’s mom
had experience as a caterer, so Leo let her
help. As Leo’s medical condition worsened,
there were times when his faithful dog was
the only one who could console him. Loki
rose to the challenge with phenomenal grace,
sailing through the process to become Leo’s
Service Dog and constant companion,
providing comfort at medical appointments,
along with his other duties. The love that the boy
poured into his dog came full circle, as it
always does. Leo had rescued Loki from the
pound, and Loki rescued Leo from the
limitations of chronic illness, and was at
his side as Leo recovered from a liver
transplant at the tender age of 12. With
Loki’s devotion and support, Leo made a full
recovery, and although they are still a
dynamic duo, Loki has been able to retire
from his service dog duties, at the ripe old
age of 12. Leo now has his own organic dog
biscuit company, and Loki taste tests every
batch! Every few months we choose one lucky dog's photo to be featured at our store. All photos are taken by Portland's premier pet photographer: Four Legged Photo. The winner receives a $25 gift certificate to The Hip Hound, their photo displayed in our store for a few months, and the final 11" x 14" picture! To qualify, sign up for a photo session at Four Legged Photo or ask at the store for details. |
